Well I remember mine, I won’t forget that time It was a cool and cloudy day He was whitetail buck, just a sitting duck Before he got away He was a decent size if I remember right I’s thinking how much he must weigh But as you might have guessed and as this song suggests He’s my one that got away The one that got away Everyone’s got a story to tell And the animal gets bigger every day The one that got away Yeah he was pretty big, in fact I think He’s the biggest we’d seen all day Not quite a Hansen Buck but I was still awe-struck By the rack that he displayed He was four-by-four, or was it five, or more? It doesn’t matter anyway Cause as big as he was I’m choking up because Now he’s someone else’s prey Well there ain’t no glory to this part of the story It’s kinda hard for me to say He’s over by that tree, just as calm as could be About fifty yards away Well I pulled the trigger but on account of buck fever My bullet went astray! I pulled the trigger again and again and again But much to my dismay

Got up on a Monday morn Working seems to be the norm Nine to five can be alright But mostly just a thorn I’d rather be hunting In the prairie country I’d rather be hunting Till the sun goes down. Got up on a Tuesday morn Same story as the day before Eight hours stress ‘n sweat And I’m walking out the door Got up on Wednesday I ain’t got much more to say Make it passed the mid-week hump And drive away Thursday the cock crowed Three down, two more to go Cup a joe and go Let’s get this show on the road Friday morning here at last No rest for the middle class Deer season so far away I wish it would come fast

Double Life 02:49
I wonder if they know at all Just where I go every fall Cuz here in the old workplace You put on a happy face But I’m living this double life Under this suit and tie There’s a bushman deep inside No longer can I can hide I think I’ll start dropping hints Wear my pocket knife with a clip And when the weather turns cold and brisk I’ll wear my orange toque and blood stained mitts! I’m breaking out, I’m breaking free of this hum-drum office monotony this cubicle space is gettin’ a face lift gonna hang up some antlers and some hunting pics no more monkey suits and casual Fridays From now on it’s camouflage and orange blaze I think my rifle’d look good next to my computer I’m putting rum and coke in the water cooler! No more livin’ this double life I’m trading my suit and tie For the bushman deep inside No longer can I hide

Got Me a Gun 03:05
Got me a gun gun, my very first real gun Got me a gun, gonna take it on a deer hunt Got me a gun gun, I can’t wait to shoot one Got me a gun, gonna have some fun! A package arrived just the other day For four to six weeks, I could hardly wait A big long box that was shaped just right I tore into it like it was Christmas night! I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to hold ‘er Took ‘er out of the box, put ‘er up to my shoulder And it felt just right, yeah, you know the feelin’ Couldn’t wait for November, I was almost squealin’! I’m so sick and tired of using other people’s guns And sightin ’em in, it just ain’t no fun You aim high and left, it shoots low and to the right Twenty clicks an inch, it just takes all night But now with my own gun it’s gonna be so great They won’t stand a chance, it’s gonna shoot so straight Ya, no more missin’, gonna drop ’em on the spot The deer’re gonna hate this here gun that I bought! It’s a high-powered rifle, a two-seventy A synthetic stock, but that’s okay with me It’s a bolt-action gun that’s user friendly With a detachable magazine!

I lost my deer He just disappeared I could sense his fear And now he’s in the clear He was standing right there Vanished in this air Well I could see why he’s scared Cause he woulda died there! And now I’m singing this sad old song Cause the only deer I’ve seen is gone Was loading up my gun now it’s too late If only I didn’t hesitate Took my eye off the prize just for a minute Don’tcha know you gotta shoot it before ya skin it Ain’t no one else to blame out here but me My deer is lost, he’s been set free (but not in a good way) His pointy ears And his big white rear Were really quite near I hope he’ll reappear It don’t seem fair He just gave me a stare No he’s out there somewhere And I don’t know where! Well I shoulda pulled the trigger! They don’t get much bigger! I’m not sure what I was thinking! He must a ran away while I was blinking! If I don’t shed a tear I’d be insincere I must persevere But I’ve been waiting all year!

Have you ever been lost And you couldn’t find your way? Well that’s how we’re feeling On this cloudy day Our directions are skewed And wouldn’t you know it? The weather’s turning ugly While the wind is a blowin’ Which way is north? Which way is south? We’re lost in the bush We can’t find our way out Conditions are bad And we might be done for If we don’t quickly figure out Which way is north Been hunting these same hills For 30 odd years Never been lost before And always found lots of deers But now here we are In the middle of the day Visibility is zero And everything’s gray I ask the other two guys We all hum and haw And point three different ways as our directions are flawed Well never in my life Have I felt so ill For sure we’re gonna die In these native sand hills

*based on a story told by a friend You know I feel so bad About what I done The life he coulda had Before he met my gun I can’t take it back It was an accident I didn’t see the rack On the top of his head I swore that was a doe I swore that was a doe I swore that was a big fat doe But no, no, no I swore that was a doe But his antlers didn’t show I swore that was a big fat doe But wouldn’tcha know I had to bury him in the snow It all happened so fast Thank God no one saw And if the C.O.’s ask I’ll deny it all I’m not a bad guy This happens all the time That’s what we tell ourselves To help us sleep at night In the snow, If only I had known

Dear Mister Deer, Where are you hiding today? I only wish that you would Come out so we could play Walking the trails With my rifle Looking for the kill If I only knew What’s over that hill I’m skeakin’ up that hill All these hills and trees Now there’s a hill right beside me Curiosity is getting the better of me I’ll put my belly down on the ground I won’t make a sound You gotta go slow so that you don’t Scare all the does I know it takes time but I don’t mind I’m up for the climb I just gotta see what’s on the other side!

I remember my first time The sun, it did not shine Still I felt the beauty of That rugged countryside Later on that night The rules not yet defined My wife’s dad took me aside And gave me this advice (and he said) “Never tell a man where you hunt! His brother or his son That’s confidential information Don’t you tell no one! You may think it’s no big deal But I assure you this is real You tell people, next thing it’s too Crowded in the field!” Well I took his advice I thought that might be wise Now when people ask me where I hunt I look them in the eyes I say “It’s way out in the sticks Two hundred miles of grids Somewhere north or west or is it South of Swift Current?” Never tell a man where you hunt! Don’t care how big his gun That’s privileged information boy So don’t you tell no one! Never tell a man where you hunt Never tell a man where you hunt

You shot my buck! That’s just my luck I had a bead on his eyes And I was aiming to fire and then you shot my buck He was a four-by-four When he fell to the floor I was gonna tell the tale Of that big whitetail But it ain’t my story no more Cause you shot my buck! That’s just my luck I had a bead on his neck And then what the heck? Aw man, you shot my buck It would’ve been my first Sometimes I think I’m cursed Too slow on the draw It’s my fatal flaw This barrel’s about to burst You shot my buck! That’s just my luck Had a bead on his head About to drop him dead But then you shot my buck What gives you the right? How d’you sleep at night? It’s first come first serve You got a lot a nerve I had ’em right in my sights You shot my buck! That’s just my luck Had a bead on his spine That muley was mine But you jerk you shot my buck Don’t think I’ll ever forgive you For taking my rack If I should to outlive you I’m taking it back Cause you shot my buck! You know how much that sucks I’ve waited my whole life For this moment in time And you fool, you shot my buck You shot my buck! My bolt was stuck I’ll never live this down Don’t you make a sound Or I’ll kick you right out of my truck You shot my buck! That’s just my luck Had a bead on his heart And now it’s back to the start You bugger you shot my buck You shot my buck! That’s just my luck I’m just so upset And I’ll never forget That day you shot my buck
